Should you book your magician directly or use an agency?
I can only speak for myself as most of my work (90%) come through recommendation or other such references.
However if you are booking blind and looking for a magician for a wedding, corporate event, or children’s parties there are a few hurdles to jump.
Do your research – I cannot stress this enough. In this day and age it is very easy to buy followers, create your own testimonials, edit videos etc.
However, with a little digging you should find the great magicians out there with genuine testimonials etc
Believe me there are some great magician, but there are some absolutely awful ones, I have heard lots of horror stories!!
Due to my long experience, I would go so far as saying I could give 50 people who you could ring at any time and ask them about my service. No problem.
The chance of us having a mutual friend colleague is extremely high.
I can almost guarantee that if I leave my house and go anywhere in the midlands I would bump into someone who has seen my magic.
Also, be careful there may be performers who advertise as local but will travel long distance for a booking, you almost certainly will be paying a premium for this, but you will no know.
Agents – Be careful, there are lots of great agencies out there who actively source the best talent to make life easier to book. But on the flip side there are lots of agencies (who take a commission) who have no quality controls and will just list everyone and anyone. I myself have been listed on websites without my permission.
Venue Recommendation – Again another sticky point, the venue may or may not be taking commission and who they recommend may be to to a multitude of reasons. I would take the recommendation but do some serious research myself just so you know you are getting the best magician for the job.
